ChatGPT prompts for handymen (2026)
Updated Oct 17, 2026 · Prices as of Oct 2026 · Some links may be affiliate links (disclosure)
Handyman work is a list: hang a door, fix a fence board, patch a hole, swap a faucet. Every list needs a quote that says what's included and what isn't, and a text the morning of so the customer is home. ChatGPT turns your shorthand into both in seconds.
Tell it your hourly or flat rates, minimum charge and what you don't do (often electrical panels, gas and roofing). Don't paste customer addresses or door codes.
Quoting a honey-do list
- Notes to estimate: "Turn these notes into a clear handyman estimate for a homeowner: [notes]. Explain the work in plain English, list what is included, what is excluded (parts over $[X], permits, major plumbing/electrical, drywall texture match guarantees), labor hours or flat price, trip fee if any, and that the quote is valid for 14 days. Under 220 words."
- Good / better / best: "Create three options for this handyman job using these details and prices: [details]. For example patch and paint vs full panel replace, or repair vs replace a fixture. Keep it easy for a homeowner to choose."
- Parts + labor split: "Rewrite this quote so labor and parts are separate lines, and note that final parts cost may change once we open the wall or fixture: [notes]. Under 150 words."
- Explain a line item: "Explain in two short paragraphs what [item, e.g. drywall patch and texture blend / toilet wax ring and supply line / TV mount with stud find] involves and why it is on their estimate. No scare tactics."
Send finished quotes from Jobber or Housecall Pro so customers can approve online. ChatGPT is for the wording, not the price book.
Day-of texts
- On my way: "Write a short, friendly text from a handyman named [name] saying they are about 20 minutes out for [job]. Under 30 words."
- Running late: "Write an apologetic text saying I am running about [X] minutes late because the previous job ran long, and offer to reschedule if that does not work."
- Trip / diagnostic fee: "Write a clear, polite text explaining our $[price] trip fee before I come out, what it covers, and ask them to reply YES to confirm."
- Parts run: "Write a short text saying I need to pick up [part] from the supply house, ETA back is about [time], and the house will be left [secure / as we left it]."
- Job done / next steps: "Write a short wrap-up text after finishing [job]: what was done, any care tips, and when they should expect the invoice. Under 60 words."
A worked example: pricing a mixed list
"Turn this list into a clear quote: 1) replace interior door slab, customer supplied, 2) patch two drywall holes about 4 inches, texture and prime, no paint, 3) replace kitchen faucet, customer supplied, 4) re-secure loose deck railing. My rate is $[rate]/hr with a $[minimum] minimum, plus materials at cost. Estimate hours per item, total it, and list what's not included."
Check the hours against your own experience. Models tend to underestimate drywall (dry and sand time) and overestimate faucets. Also check that the exclusions match your licensing. Many states cap handyman work by job size or require a license for plumbing and electrical.
Follow-ups that win the next list
- Estimate follow-up: "Write a brief check-in text about a handyman estimate I sent [X] days ago for [job]. Friendly, no pressure, offer to answer questions."
- Last follow-up: "Write a final follow-up email for an unanswered handyman quote. Mention openings on [days] and offer to hold a slot until [date]."
- Honey-do list offer: "Write a short note to past customers offering a half-day or full-day handyman block for a punch list of small jobs. Price placeholder $[price]. Under 80 words."
- Referral ask: "Write a short text thanking a customer after [job] and asking them to share our name with a neighbor who needs odd jobs done. Under 40 words."
Job notes and handoffs
- Clean up job notes: "Rewrite these rough notes into clear job notes for the customer record: [notes]. Sections: complaint, findings, work done, parts used, recommendations, follow-up needed."
- Parts list: "Turn this job description into a draft parts and materials list I will double-check at the store: [job]."
- When to call a licensed trade: "Rewrite this customer explanation saying I can handle [small fix] but [electrical panel / gas line / structural / roof leak] needs a licensed [electrician / plumber / roofer / GC], and offer to help coordinate. Based on: [notes]. Calm, clear, under 120 words."
- For the crew: "Translate these job instructions into clear, simple Spanish: [instructions]."
Seasonal marketing
- Season calendar: "Plan a month-by-month promo calendar for a handyman business in [region]. For each month, list what to promote (gutter cleaning, weatherstripping, deck boards, holiday lighting hang, spring punch lists, fence repairs) and one post idea."
- Honey-do email: "Write a short email to past customers offering a [half-day / Saturday] punch-list visit before [holiday / season], with a booking link placeholder and a deadline of [date]."
- Door hanger: "Write door hanger copy for [handyman services / odd jobs] in [town]. Headline, three bullets, offer, CTA. Under 60 words."
- Before/after caption: "Write five short Facebook captions for before-and-after handyman photos: drywall patch, faucet swap, deck board replace, TV mount, closet shelf install."
Canva turns the text into a flyer in a few minutes. For email, Mailchimp is fine at this size.
Replying to Google reviews
- Positive review: "Write a reply to this 5-star review of my handyman business: [review]. Thank them personally and mention the job type, keep it short and skip the emojis."
- Negative review: "Reply to this negative review: [review]. Stay calm, acknowledge the issue, do not argue or share private job details, and invite them to call so we can make it right. Under 80 words."
- Review request: "Write a short text asking a customer for a Google review after I finished their [job] today. Include a link placeholder, under 40 words."

Your website and Google profile
- "Write a plain service page for [service, e.g. drywall repair / faucet installation / furniture assembly / deck repair] in [town], with a short FAQ. Only use these facts: [facts]."
- "Draft the About section for the Google profile of my handyman business under 750 characters. Services: [list]. Areas: [towns]."
What ChatGPT gets wrong
- Anything you don't tell it, it may invent. Check numbers, dates and warranty terms line by line.
- It doesn't know your state's handyman license limits. Check them before quoting plumbing, electrical or jobs over your state's dollar cap.
- Hours estimates are a starting point, not a quote.
ChatGPT's free tier runs every prompt here. If you hit the daily limits, Go ($8/mo) raises them, and Plus ($20/mo) adds the most capable models. Prices as of Oct 2026. Claude and Copilot handle these prompts too. Our comparison covers the differences.

FAQ
Can ChatGPT help handymen price jobs?
It can split a list into items, estimate rough hours if you tell it your pace, and total the quote. Always check its hours against your own experience before sending.
What do handymen use ChatGPT for most?
Turning a customer's rambling list into a clean, itemized quote, and writing day-of texts. Both save time every day.
