AI tools for fire pit, chiminea and patio heater pros (2026)
Updated Oct 17, 2026 · Prices as of Oct 2026 · Some links may be affiliate links (disclosure)
Fire features sell on feeling. People picture October nights around a fire, and they want it before the first cold weekend. Your job is to turn that into a clear quote fast: wood or gas, kit or custom stone, how far from the house, who runs the gas line and what the permit says. The tools below help with the quote, the deposit and the fall rush.
This guide replaces our separate chiminea, patio heater and smoker guides. Builders often do more than one, and the customer is the same person. For full outdoor kitchens, see the outdoor kitchen guide. We checked every price in October 2026.

Quote in three tiers
Most fire pit leads ask "how much for a fire pit?" Give three options in one quote so they pick instead of shop:
- Good: a wood-burning steel ring or block kit on a gravel base.
- Better: custom stone or block with a cap, on a paver pad with a seat wall.
- Best: natural gas or propane burner with electronic ignition, gas run by your licensed sub, plus lighting.
Jobber and Housecall Pro both support optional line items, so the customer checks the box. Ask for a wide photo of the spot, the distance to the house, fence and overhanging trees, whether there's an existing patio, and the gas meter location if they want gas.
Product notes
- Chimineas: mostly drop-and-set work. Clay cracks if it's fired hot too soon or left wet over winter, so include a short curing and cover sheet. Price a level gravel or paver pad separately, and note clearance to the house and overhead branches.
- Patio heaters: the fuel path sets the price. Portable propane is a delivery. A hardwired infrared heater needs a dedicated circuit from a licensed electrician. A natural gas post or wall heater needs a gas stub from a licensed fitter. Ask where people will sit, since heaters warm a zone and wind steals heat fast.
- Custom smokers: a fabrication business. Quote steel thickness, cooking chamber size, firebox style (offset, reverse flow, cabinet), trailer or cart, and lead time. Take a meaningful deposit to buy steel, and send progress photos. They sell the next build.
Clearance and permits
Put the clearance you used and the code basis on every quote. Many jurisdictions adopt the International Fire Code (25 feet for recreational fires and 15 feet for portable outdoor fireplaces from structures), but cities amend it, HOAs add rules and gas features follow fuel-gas codes. ChatGPT can turn your notes into a one-paragraph explanation for the customer. It cannot tell you what your city requires. Call the fire marshal or building department once, then save the answer in your notes for that town.
Plan for the fall rush
Demand spikes from late August to November. In July, email last year's customers and quote requests that never closed (Mailchimp's free plan covers 250 contacts) with a "book before October" offer. Collect deposits to lock the schedule, and order stone and burner kits early. Burner lead times stretch in the fall.
Saved replies
- First reply: "Happy to price this. Could you send a wide photo of the spot, roughly how far it is from the house, and whether you'd want wood or gas? If gas, a photo of your meter helps."
- Gas line: "The gas line is run and permitted by our licensed fitter. It's listed separately on your quote so you can see exactly what it costs."
- Smoker update: "Your cook chamber is welded. Photo attached. Firebox goes on next week, and we're still on track for the 14th."
Your software budget
- Side business: Wave free invoices, Calendly free and ChatGPT free. $0.
- Full-time builder: Jobber Core ($29/mo annually), Quo Starter ($15/mo annually), CompanyCam Core ($63/mo annually). About $107 a month.
- Smoker shop: Square's free plan for deposits and orders. Pay only card fees: 3.3% + 30¢ online, so a $1,500 deposit costs about $50 to take by card. Ask for ACH (1%, capped at $10 on Square's paid plans) on big deposits.
The fine print
- Burn bans and wildfire season can freeze wood-burning sales overnight in parts of the West. Gas options hedge that.
- Gas work adds liability. Keep it with a licensed sub and keep their permit in your job file.
- AI care sheets for chimineas and smokers often repeat folklore. Check them against the manufacturer's instructions.

FAQ
How far does a fire pit have to be from the house?
It depends on your local code. Many places adopt the International Fire Code, which sets 25 feet from structures for recreational fires and 15 feet for portable outdoor fireplaces, but cities amend it and gas fire features are often treated differently. Check with the local fire marshal and put the distance you used on the quote.
Can I connect a gas fire pit or heater myself?
Only if you hold the license your state requires for gas work. Most fire pit builders sub out the gas line and the permit to a licensed plumber or gas fitter and price that as a separate line on the quote, so the customer can see what is code work and what is stone work.
Is there demand for custom smokers?
Yes, but it is a product business: steel, welding and a long lead time, sold to a small, picky crowd of backyard and competition cooks. Most sales come from photos, cook-off appearances and word of mouth, so a good online order page and clear deposit terms matter more than field-service software.
