Best AI tools for door installers (2026)
Updated Oct 17, 2026 · Prices as of Oct 2026 · Some links may be affiliate links (disclosure)
Door work is measure, order, wait, then hang. The measuring has to be right, the order has to be right, and the customer has to be kept calm through a lead time that can run weeks for custom entry doors. Software won't hang a door, but it can keep the measurements, orders and updates straight so the hang day is the easy part.
Tax credit update: the federal 25C credit for energy-efficient exterior doors and windows ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025, per the IRS. If your quotes or website still mention a door credit, remove it. Every price here was checked in October 2026.

Measure once, order once
Most costly mistakes are order mistakes: wrong handing, wrong jamb depth, wrong swing. Make a measure checklist in your field app and fill it in for every opening:
- Rough opening width and height, and jamb depth (wall thickness)
- Handing and swing, from the outside looking in, written in words and shown in a photo
- Slab vs. prehung, threshold type and sill condition (rot is common at entry doors)
- Glass, finish, hardware bore and backset
- Casing and trim: reuse or replace, and paint by whom
- Build year. Pre-1978 means lead-safe rules may apply
Take a photo of the tape on each dimension. Before you place the order, have ChatGPT turn your checklist notes into an order summary, then compare it line by line with the supplier's order form.
Quote in tiers
- Entry doors: slab replacement in the existing frame, a full prehung unit, and a prehung unit with sidelites or a new storm door.
- Patio doors: vinyl slider, upgraded slider, or hinged French doors.
- Interior packages: priced per door, with a discount for full-house jobs and add-ons for trim.
Housecall Pro's estimate options, or optional line items on Jobber's Grow plan, let customers choose online. ChatGPT is useful for a short side-by-side explanation of fiberglass vs. steel vs. wood that you can reuse on every quote.
Lead times without the angry calls
- At order, text the expected ship window and save the order number to the job.
- Set a reminder for the ship date. When it ships, text the customer and offer two hang dates.
- If it slips, tell them before they ask.
Hang day for a fiberglass entry door
The door shipped two weeks late, which the customer heard about from you before they thought to ask. The day before, they get a text: we'll start at 8, the doorway will be open for a couple of hours, and please keep pets away from the front of the house.
8:00: unwrap and check the unit against the order summary. Handing, jamb depth, glass, bore. It matches.
8:30: old door out. The subfloor under the threshold is soft along about 10 inches, the most common surprise at entry doors. Photo, saved "rot found" text, approval by reply, and the fix is done by 10.
10:00 to 12:30: set, shim, fasten, check reveals, install the lockset, foam and seal. Casing goes back on, with the exterior trim caulked.
1:00: walk-through. The customer locks and unlocks it twice and you show them the threshold adjustment. Invoice with the rot repair as its own line, and a before-and-after photo for the review request.
Saved replies
- Order placed: "Your door is ordered (#__). The factory estimate is __ weeks. I'll text you when it ships so we can pick a hang date."
- Rot found: "When we pulled the old threshold, the subfloor under it was soft (photo attached). Fixing it now is $__ and takes about an hour. It'll keep the new door from failing."
- Tax credit question: "The federal door and window credit ended for installs after 2025. Your utility may have something, though. I can check for you."
Budget
- Solo installer: Jobber Core ($29/mo annually) and Quo Starter ($15/mo annually). About $44 a month.
- Crew with a salesperson: add CompanyCam Core ($63/mo annually) for photo records and NiceJob ($75/mo). About $182 a month.
One wrong-handed custom entry door can cost more than a year of software, between the restocking fee, a second trip and a delayed hang. The measure checklist is the cheapest insurance you'll buy.
Honest downsides
Supplier ordering is often a separate portal, so there's double entry unless your supplier integrates. Old houses hide surprises: out-of-square openings, rot and lead paint. Price contingencies in writing. Ending the 25C credit removed a sales talking point for energy-efficient doors. Sell comfort, security and looks instead.

FAQ
Is there still a federal tax credit for new exterior doors?
No, not for doors installed now. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (Section 25C), which covered up to $250 per qualifying exterior door and $500 total, does not apply to property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Some utilities and states still have programs, so check locally and update any old marketing.
Do I need lead-safe certification to replace doors in older homes?
If the home was built before 1978 and you disturb more than a small amount of painted surface (over 6 square feet inside or 20 square feet outside), the EPA Renovation, Repair and Painting rule generally requires an EPA-certified firm and lead-safe work practices. Replacing a door and its casing in an old house often crosses that line.
How do I keep customers happy during long door lead times?
Give them the expected lead time in writing at the order, put the order date and expected ship date on the job in your field app, and send a short update when it ships. Most frustration comes from silence, not from the wait itself.
How long does an entry door replacement take?
A prehung entry door in a sound opening is often a half-day to one-day job. Rot repair, sidelites or out-of-square openings add time. Quote contingencies for rot in writing.
What causes most door order mistakes?
Handing, jamb depth and rough opening sizes. Use the same measure checklist on every job, photograph the tape on each dimension and compare your notes to the supplier's order form before you submit.
