AI tools for putting green and mini golf builders (2026)

Updated Oct 17, 2026 · Prices as of Oct 2026 · Some links may be affiliate links (disclosure)

A backyard putting green is a turf job sold as a lifestyle upgrade. The customer has seen one on social media and wants break, a fringe and a chipping spot. Your edge is turning a vague "how much for a green?" into a square-foot quote with a picture, fast. The craft (grading, base and turf seams) is still yours.

This guide replaces our separate putt-putt builders guide. Mini golf courses are the same skill set with more design. Pricing was checked in October 2026.

The same-day ballpark

  1. Get the yard on screen. Ask for two wide photos and the address. Trace the green on a satellite view to get square feet.
  2. Ask the questions that change price: flat practice pad or real break, number of cups, fringe or chipping area, what's there now (sod, rock, concrete), slope and drainage, access for a skid steer, sprinkler heads and utilities.
  3. Send a range with a picture. An iScape mockup on their own photo closes more jobs than a number alone.
  4. Visit to confirm grade and drainage, then send the final quote in Jobber with each add-on (fringe, extra cups, chipping area) on its own line.

Do the material math before you quote

Example: a 500 sq ft green with a 4-inch aggregate base. 500 × (4 ÷ 12) = 167 cubic feet, ÷ 27 = about 6.2 cubic yards before compaction. Order around 7.5 to 8 to allow for compaction and waste, and confirm with your supplier, because compaction factors vary by material. Turf comes in fixed roll widths, so plan seams and waste on the layout, not on square footage alone. ChatGPT can build you a simple calculator for this. Check its formulas once with a known job.

Mini golf: sell the design

  • Backyard courses (3 to 9 holes): families, short-term rentals and event spaces. Quote design, then each hole as a line item with its obstacle.
  • Obstacles: timber, concrete, boulders or themed plywood builds. Fabrication time is where estimates go wrong. Track hours on the first few.
  • Commercial courses: plans, permits, ADA access and lighting. Partner with a designer unless you've done one.

ChatGPT is helpful for themes, hole names and signage text. SketchUp is better for real layouts, because hole lengths and banks have to fit the space.

A 500-square-foot green, by day

Day one: 811 flags are already in. The crew strips the sod, caps two sprinkler heads in the footprint and photographs the caps. The spoils go out in the trailer.

Day two: base. About 8 yards of aggregate, compacted in lifts. Then the part that makes it a real green: shaping the break. Two gentle slopes toward the back cup, checked with a level and a ball rolled by hand. Fine top layer, compacted again. This is the step a bargain installer rushes.

Day three: turf down with the grain toward the main putting spot, one seam placed away from the cups, cups cut and set, fringe turf edged in, infill brushed. The customer putts the first ball. You take the video for your social posts with their permission, and send the invoice and the care sheet.

That's three days with a crew of two or three for a yard with skid steer access. Without access, add a day of wheelbarrows, and say so on the quote.

Texts worth saving

  • First reply: "Thanks! Send two wide photos of the area and roughly how big you're thinking. I'll send a ballpark today, with a picture of the green in your yard."
  • Deposit: "To hold your May install date, the deposit is __%. That lets me order turf now, which is the long lead item."
  • Care: "Brush the green every few weeks and blow off leaves. Top off infill once a year if the ball starts rolling fast. I offer a yearly tune-up for $__."

The monthly bill

  • Part-time: Calendly free, Wave free, ChatGPT free, iScape monthly in spring only ($29.99/mo). About $30 a month in season.
  • Full-time installer: Jobber Core ($29/mo annually), Quo Starter ($15/mo annually), iScape Pro annual ($299.99/yr, about $25/mo). About $69 a month.
  • Design-build: add SketchUp Go ($129/yr) for mini golf and contoured greens.

One extra $9,000 green a season from faster, visual quotes covers several years of this stack.

Where we would be careful

  • Mockups don't show drainage or base problems, and customers fall in love with the picture. Set expectations about grade on site.
  • High-ticket backyard projects drop off quickly when the economy slows.
  • Turf makers' warranties often depend on install specs. Follow them and save photos of the base.

FAQ

How do I quote a backyard putting green?

Price by square foot with a base tier and add-ons. The base covers excavation, compacted aggregate base, weed barrier, turf, infill and cups. Add-ons include contours and break, a fringe or chipping area, extra cups, edging, lighting and removing old sod or concrete. Measure on a satellite view for a ballpark, then confirm on site.

What base does a synthetic putting green need?

Most installers use a few inches of compacted crushed aggregate topped with finer screenings so the putting surface is smooth and drains. Depth depends on your soil and the turf maker's spec. Poor drainage is the most common failure, so check where water goes before you dig.

Is building mini golf courses a good add-on?

For a turf installer, yes, but it is a design-build job. Backyard 3 to 9 hole courses sell to families and short-term rental owners, and commercial courses need plans, permits and much more obstacle fabrication. Quote design time separately, because customers change layouts several times.

How long does a backyard putting green take to install?

A few hundred square feet often takes two to three days with a small crew: demo, base and contour, then turf. Tight access or a lot of hand-carrying adds time.

Can a putting green have real break?

Yes. Contours are shaped in the base before the turf goes down. Plan them on the layout, keep slopes gentle enough to hold a ball near the cup, and check them by rolling balls before you lay turf.
