Turf customers usually arrive with two numbers in their head: the per-square-foot price they saw in an ad, and how much they spend watering the lawn. Your job is to explain why your price is real (base, seams, infill, edging) and to quote fast enough that they don't keep shopping.

Quote from the satellite, order from the sketch

Trace the area on a satellite view and price per square foot for a same-day range. Then visit, measure, and sketch the seam layout before ordering. Rolls come in fixed widths, often 15 feet, so a 22-foot-wide yard needs either two pieces with a seam or a lot of waste.

Example: a 30 by 22 foot backyard is 660 square feet. Laid in two 15-foot-wide runs 30 feet long, you buy 900 square feet of turf and cut off about 240. Turn the runs the other way (22-foot runs, one full 15-foot width plus a 7-foot strip from a second roll) and the math changes. Ten minutes on the sketch can save a few hundred dollars of turf.

Base math for the same yard: 3.5 inches of compacted aggregate is 660 × (3.5 ÷ 12) = 192 cubic feet, about 7.1 yards before compaction. Order more for compaction, and confirm with your supplier.

Tiers that sell

  • Front yard: lower pile, looks-first turf, standard infill.
  • Family backyard: mid-weight turf, cooler infill options where heat is a concern.
  • Pet area: more permeable base and backing, odor-control infill, and an upkeep sheet.
  • Putting green: see our putting green guide.

Tools

Jobber (from $29/mo) for square-foot quotes with tiers and deposits. iScape (Pro $29.99/mo or $299.99/yr) to drop turf onto a photo of the customer's yard. This one actually closes jobs, because people buy the picture. ChatGPT for the upkeep sheet and for honest answers to "will it get hot?" (yes, in direct sun it can get much hotter than grass, so say so).

Rebates: check before you mention them

Some utilities in dry areas pay to remove grass, and many of those programs exclude artificial turf. Keep a note per utility. If yours excludes turf, don't hint otherwise. A customer who expected a rebate and didn't get one writes the review.

A 660-square-foot backyard, by day

Day one: the crew cuts out the sod and digs about 4 inches deep. Before anyone digs, the 811 locate is done. A sprinkler line is capped and the cap is photographed. The spoils leave in a dump trailer, priced on the quote as haul-off.

Day two: aggregate base goes in, about 7 yards plus extra for compaction, wet and compacted in lifts. This is the part the cheap installer skips, and it's why their seams show by summer. Benderboard or another edging goes on the patio side.

Day three: the two runs go down with the grain the same way, then the seam, nails at the edges, infill brushed in. The walk-through covers the upkeep sheet (rinse pet areas, brush high-traffic spots, blow off leaves). The final invoice and a review request go out before the crew leaves.

Three days is typical for a yard this size with a crew of three. Saying so in the quote keeps customers from expecting a one-day job.

Costs by company size

  • New installer: Jobber Core and Quo Starter. $44 a month. Skip the mockup app and show photos of your last five yards.
  • One crew, losing bids to companies with mockups: add iScape annual. About $69 a month.
  • Two or three crews: Housecall Pro Essentials ($149 annual), Quo for three ($45) and iScape. About $219 a month.

Downsides to own up to

Heat, smell in pet areas and seams that show are the three most common complaints. All three are install and product choices you make, not something software fixes. HOAs sometimes restrict front-yard turf. Ask early.

FAQ

How do turf installers measure without a visit?

Trace the area on a satellite view for a first price, then confirm on site. Turf comes in fixed roll widths (often 15 feet), so order quantity depends on the seam layout, not just square footage. Plan seams on a sketch before ordering.

Are there rebates for replacing grass with turf?

Some water utilities in dry regions pay per square foot to remove grass, but many exclude artificial turf and only pay for living, water-wise landscaping. Check the program rules for each utility you serve before mentioning a rebate to a customer.

What is different about pet turf?

Pet installs need better drainage (a more permeable base and backing), an antimicrobial or odor-control infill, and a clear cleaning routine for the owner. Price them as a separate tier and explain the upkeep in writing.

How long does an artificial turf install take?

A few hundred square feet often takes a crew two to three days: demo, base, then turf and infill. Bigger yards, tight access or a lot of hand-carrying add time. Put the expected number of days on the quote.

Does artificial turf get hot?

Yes. In direct sun it can get much hotter than natural grass. Lighter-colored or cooling infills and shade help. Tell customers before they buy, especially for kids and pets.

Should turf installers show mockups?

If you're losing bids to companies that show one, yes. Customers buy the picture. A photo mockup app costs about $25 a month on the annual plan and pays for itself with one extra yard a year.
