Best AI tools for EV charger installers (2026)
Updated Oct 17, 2026 · Prices as of Oct 2026 · Some links may be affiliate links (disclosure)
Home EV charger installs are one of the cleanest jobs an electrician can sell: a defined scope, a customer who just bought a car and wants to charge this week, and a price you can often give from photos. The money is in quoting fast without missing the thing that makes the job twice as long, usually the panel, the run or the permit.
Federal credit update: the federal EV charger credit (Section 30C) ended for property placed in service after June 30, 2026, per the IRS. If your website, quotes or ads still mention a 30% federal credit, take it down. Utility and state rebates still exist in many areas. Prices below are from October 2026.
The stack
| Tool | Job it does | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Housecall Pro | Online booking for "EV charger quote," good/better/best estimates, financing | Basic $59/mo billed annually ($79 monthly); Essentials $149/mo annually for 5 users; MAX $299/mo annually |
| Jobber | Photo intake form, quotes with options, permit and inspection scheduling | Core $29/mo billed annually ($49 month to month); Connect $99/mo annually; Grow $149/mo annually |
| Quo | Texting for panel photos, missed-call text-back | Starter $15/user/mo annually ($19 monthly), plus a one-time $19.50 texting registration fee |
| Smith.ai | Answers calls while you're in a panel | AI Receptionist free for 25 calls/mo, then Pro $150/mo for 75 calls |
| ChatGPT | Plain-English quote explanations, rebate paperwork checklists | Free; Go $8/mo; Plus $20/mo |
| NiceJob | Reviews from new EV owners, who talk to other EV owners | Starter $75/mo, Pro $125/mo, no contract |
The photo quote, step by step
- Intake form: car make and model, charger already bought or not (and which one), hardwired or plug-in, garage or driveway, and photos of the panel (door open), the panel label, the parking spot and the route between them.
- Check the panel: main breaker size, open spaces and big existing loads (electric range, dryer, heat pump, hot tub). A load calculation decides whether you need a load management device or a service upgrade.
- Measure the run: estimate wire length and conduit path. Basement or attic routing, a detached garage or trenching changes the job.
- Send three options: a plug-in NEMA 14-50 outlet, a hardwired charger at the right amperage, and a hardwired charger with load management if the panel is tight.
- Book the permit and the inspection as tasks on the job, with the customer's rebate deadline noted.
The math to get right
EV charging is a continuous load, so size the circuit at 125% of the charger's output. A 48-amp setting needs a 60-amp circuit. A 40-amp setting needs 50. Wire size follows the breaker, the run length and the wiring method, so long runs may need a bigger conductor for voltage drop.
For the customer, translate it into miles. A 48-amp charger on 240 volts delivers about 11.5 kW. At roughly 3 to 4 miles per kWh, that's 35 to 45 miles of range per hour. A 32-amp setting gives about 7.7 kW, or 23 to 30 miles an hour, which is plenty for most overnight charging. That explanation often talks people out of a panel upgrade they don't need.
Rebates: help, but don't promise
With the federal credit gone, the incentive questions move to utilities and states. Many utilities offer charger rebates, wiring rebates or special EV rates, often with requirements like a qualified installer, a specific charger list or enrollment in a time-of-use rate. Keep a short note for each utility you serve. ChatGPT can turn a utility's rebate PDF into a customer checklist. Check it against the source, and link the customer to the program page instead of quoting a dollar amount from memory.
Texts worth saving
- Photo request: "Congrats on the new car! To quote today I need: a photo of your electrical panel with the door open, the sticker inside the door, and the spot where you'll park. Do you already have a charger?"
- Panel is tight: "Your panel is close to full. Instead of a $__ service upgrade, I can install a load management device for $__ so the charger slows down when the house is using a lot of power. Most people never notice."
- Federal credit question: "The federal charger credit ended for installs after June 30, 2026. Your utility may still have a rebate, though. Here's their page: [link]."
Monthly cost
- Electrician adding EV installs: Jobber Core ($29/mo annually) plus Quo Starter ($15/mo annually). About $44 a month.
- EV-focused shop with two vans: Housecall Pro Essentials ($149/mo annually for 5 users), Quo for both techs and NiceJob ($75/mo).
Fast photo quotes are the return. If quoting the same day closes two more $1,400 installs a month, that's $2,800 of work from a $44 setup.
The fine print
- Photos miss things: aluminum feeders, a panel brand with known problems, a run through a finished ceiling. Write "subject to site verification" into photo quotes.
- Demand follows car sales and incentives. The end of federal credits may slow some customers down.
- AI should never do your load calculation or pick conductor sizes. Use the NEC as adopted locally.

FAQ
Is there still a federal tax credit for home EV chargers?
No, not for new installs. The federal alternative fuel refueling property credit (Section 30C) only applied to property placed in service through June 30, 2026, and only in eligible census tracts. Many utilities and some states still offer charger or wiring rebates, so check your utility before quoting and do not promise a federal credit.
What size breaker does a Level 2 charger need?
EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit is sized at 125% of the charger's output. A charger set to 48 amps needs a 60-amp circuit, and one set to 32 amps needs 40 amps. Whether the panel can carry it depends on a load calculation. Many chargers can be set to a lower amperage, or paired with a load management device, to avoid a panel upgrade.
Can I quote an EV charger install from photos?
Often, yes, for a standard garage install. Ask for a photo of the panel with the door open, the panel label, the parking spot and the path between them. Long runs, detached garages, trenching, condo buildings and full panels usually need a site visit.
