Soundproofing is the trade with the biggest gap between what customers expect and what physics allows. They want silence. You can usually deliver a big reduction in voices and TV and a smaller one for bass and footsteps. Setting that expectation in writing before you start is the most important thing you'll do.
Find out what the noise is
Voices through a wall are a different problem from a neighbor's subwoofer or footsteps from above. Ask the customer what they hear, when, and from where. If you can, record a sound level reading at the start. A cheap meter app gives you a rough before number to compare with the after.
Explain the options in plain English
Customers get lost in STC numbers. Use simple terms. Mass means heavier walls. Decoupling means the two sides of the wall don't touch, using resilient channel, clips or staggered studs. Damping compounds go between layers of drywall. Sealing closes gaps at outlets and edges. ChatGPT (Free; Go $8/mo; Plus $20/mo) is good at writing these as short, friendly explanations; give it your actual method and check what it writes.
Quote good, better, best in Housecall Pro (Basic $59/mo billed annually ($79 monthly); Essentials $149/mo annually for 5 users; MAX $299/mo annually) or Jobber (Core $29/mo billed annually ($49 month to month); Connect $99/mo annually; Grow $149/mo annually). Option one adds a layer with damping compound. Option two adds clips and channel. Option three is a new decoupled wall. Each with what improvement the customer can realistically expect.
Flanking is what kills results
You can build a great wall and the customer still hears the neighbor through the shared duct, the door or the floor. Walk the room and list every path: doors, outlets, vents, recessed lights, shared joists. Put the ones you're not treating in writing: "This scope doesn't address sound through the HVAC duct or the door." That sentence saves you more refunds than anything else on this page.
Example scope
Illustration only. A 12-foot shared bedroom wall, 8 feet tall: 96 square feet. Add a second layer of 5/8-inch drywall with damping compound, seal outlets and edges, replace the hollow-core door with a solid-core one with seals. Price each line separately. The door often matters as much as the wall.
Before and after
Take the same reading after the job, in the same spot, with the same sound source if you can. A short write-up with the before and after numbers gives the customer something concrete and gives you a case study for your site.
Caveats
Low-frequency noise is hard and expensive to stop. Don't promise it. Condo and apartment work needs building approval. Foam panels are not soundproofing, and some competitors sell them that way; you can explain the difference without naming anyone.

FAQ
What does STC mean?
Sound Transmission Class is a lab rating of how well a wall or floor assembly blocks airborne sound like voices. Higher is better. Field results are often lower than the lab rating because of flanking paths and installation details.
Why didn't soundproofing fix the noise?
Sound often travels around the treated wall through doors, ducts, outlets, floors or ceilings (flanking). Low-frequency sound like bass and footfall is also much harder to stop than voices. Set expectations before you start.
Is acoustic foam soundproofing?
No. Foam and panels absorb echo inside a room. They do very little to stop sound from passing through walls. Blocking sound needs mass, decoupling, damping and sealing.
