Best AI tools for mobile mechanics (2026)

A mobile mechanic's shop is a van and a driveway. That changes the software math. You do not need bay scheduling or a waiting room. You need quotes that customers approve from their phone, parts that arrive where you will be, a route that does not waste two hours on the highway, and repair data on a tablet in someone's garage. Getting those right matters more than any AI feature.

A day in the van

  • 6:45 a.m.: three jobs today. Brakes on a sedan, a no-start diagnosis, and an alternator. The route puts them in one side of town.
  • 7:00: parts for the brake job were ordered last night through PartsTech from the parts store a mile from the first stop. The driver picks them up on the way.
  • 7:45: on-the-way text sent automatically. Customer leaves the keys under the mat.
  • 9:40: brakes done. Photos of the old pads and rotors are attached to the invoice. The customer pays by card on the phone.
  • 10:30: no-start. The scan tool shows a crank sensor code. The mechanic checks the wiring diagram in his repair info app, confirms the sensor, and sends a quote from the driveway. Approved in 6 minutes.
  • 12:15 p.m.: a new lead calls. The AI answering service gets year, make, model, symptoms and address, and quotes the diagnostic fee. Booked for tomorrow.
  • 4:30: alternator done. On the drive home, voice notes become a short follow-up text drafted by ChatGPT: "Your battery tested weak today. We'd plan on replacing it before winter."

Monthly cost at three sizes

Part-time, nights and weekends. Jobber Core at $29, PartsTech free, ChatGPT free, and a repair info subscription only if you take on electrical work. $29 to about $245 a month. Many part-timers start without paid repair info and regret it the first time they chase a wiring fault.

Full-time, one van. Jobber Core $29 or Housecall Pro Basic $59, ProDemand at $214, PartsTech free, Smith.ai free tier. About $245 to $275 a month. At $120 an hour, that is a little over two billed hours.

Three vans. Jobber Connect at $99 for route optimization, or AutoLeap Essentials at $179 if you want auto-specific inspections and estimates in one place. One repair info subscription may cover the team depending on the license, so ask. Smith.ai Pro at $150. Plan on $450 to $550 a month.

Parts are the real scheduling problem

Shops have a parts room and a delivery driver. You have a van and a gap between jobs. The fix is to quote and order the day before whenever you can, and to note on each job where the parts are coming from. If a job depends on a part that is not in stock locally, do not book it for the morning. Book it for the afternoon or the next day, and tell the customer why.

Keep a small stock of what you use every week: common filters, bulbs, wiper blades, a few batteries if you have room. PartsTech's order history shows what you buy most, which takes the guessing out of it.

Setting up the business side

  1. Write your service list with flat prices where possible: oil change, brake pads per axle, battery install, diagnostic fee.
  2. Set a trip fee and a service radius. Charge more for the far edge of the map, or do not go there.
  3. Connect PartsTech to the suppliers near your usual area, and order the night before when you can.
  4. Build quote templates with labor from your repair info and parts with your markup.
  5. Turn on on-the-way texts and require a card on file for diagnostic appointments.
  6. Set up an AI or answering service script that collects year, make, model, symptoms, location and whether the car runs.

Practical AI uses

Phone triage is the biggest win. A mobile mechanic under a car cannot answer, and the caller will try the next number. An answering service that asks the right questions and books a diagnostic is worth more than any chatbot on your website.

Customer explanations are second. "P0335 crank sensor, connector corroded, replaced sensor and pigtail" turns into two plain sentences the owner understands. Add a photo of the corroded connector and they trust you.

Third is follow-up. AI can draft a short reminder for the work you recommended but did not do, timed for a month later. That is easy repeat business.

Fourth, reviews. A two-line text after payment, with a direct link, gets far more Google reviews than asking in person. For a mobile business with no storefront, reviews are your sign out front.

Do not use it to diagnose. A symptom list from a chatbot is a starting point, and it is frequently wrong about which models have which known issues. Your scan data and repair info are the real answer.

Our recommendations

One van: Jobber Core plus PartsTech and ProDemand. Jobber is built for driving to customers, its quote approval is simple, and it is the cheapest solid option. Choose Housecall Pro instead if you like giving good, better, best options on quotes, which works well for brakes and tires.

Growing past two vans: test AutoLeap. Its inspections and estimates are made for auto work, and the AI receptionist add-on at $99 is cheaper than most answering services. Stick with Jobber Connect if routing and dispatch are your bigger headache.

Weak spots for mobile work

Field service apps do not know what a VIN is, so you will type vehicle details into custom fields. Shop software assumes a building, so its scheduling and routing feel clumsy on the road. Repair info leases are 12 months, and walking away early is not easy. PartsTech is only as good as the stock at nearby stores, and the part you need will still sometimes be an hour away. And customers will push for a price over the phone. Hold the line at the diagnostic fee.

FAQ

What software should a mobile mechanic start with?

A general field service app like Jobber or Housecall Pro handles quotes, scheduling, on-the-way texts and payments at a lower price than shop software, and it understands driving to customers. Jobber Core is $29 a month billed annually. Add free PartsTech for parts ordering and a repair information subscription.

Do I need ALLDATA or ProDemand?

If you do anything beyond brakes and basic maintenance, yes. Wiring diagrams, torque specs, TSBs and labor times save more than they cost. ProDemand's 12-month repair and estimating lease is $214 a month for new customers, and ALLDATA Repair is reported at $209 a month on an annual plan.

Is shop software like AutoLeap worth it for a mobile business?

It can be once you have two or more vans. AutoLeap Essentials is $179 a month billed annually and is built for auto repair, with digital inspections, estimates and customer texting. For a one-van operation, the field service apps are cheaper and handle routing better.

How do I price mobile repair?

Use book labor time from your repair information, your hourly rate, parts with a markup, and a trip or service call fee that covers drive time. Many mobile mechanics charge close to shop labor rates because customers pay for the convenience. Put the trip fee in writing on the quote.

Can AI diagnose a car from symptoms?

It can list common causes for a symptom and help you plan what to check, which is handy on the phone. It cannot replace a scan tool and your hands on the car. Do not give customers a diagnosis or price based on a chatbot's guess.
